Dear all,
Me and Elder Bradley had been doing charity work as well. It is a new rule by the Mission President to do 4 hour service per week. So me and Elder Bradley had been visiting a nursing home in Sibu and had been talking with the old folks for weeks. We went and talked to the person in charge to see if there is anything we can do to help and he said that the only thing we can do is to talk with the old folks. I talked and listen from 6 old woman after visiting the nursing home twice. One of them only know how to speak hokkien and I only speak basic hokkien, so most of the time, I was listening and didn't know what she was talking about. The funny part was that I have no idea what I was talking and it's more like hokkien mixed with Bahasa. As for the others, I have no problem speaking mandarin or bahasa. Getting to know about them is really fun and it reminds me a lot about grandma. One of them told me she is always abused by the husband so I told her that my grandma was the same with you. And most of the old folks here told me that their family dump them inside which really anger me. But I told them, it's alright. I am coming to see you every week. And I even show them the family pictures and talk with them about my family.
On Saturday, me and Elder Bradley went to Mukah by bus. We went to Mukah to witness a special baptism performed in the river that connects to the sea. It was a huge baptism because 6 people were baptized. When we were in Mukah, an Islam old lady invited us over to her house and gave us some food. It was so delicious because she serves us with lemang with curry chicken and many types of kuihs. The Elders in Mukah usually visit the Old Lady's restaurant. They call her ibu most of the time which means mother in Bahasa. It was really fun because most of the time people would just feed us. And it was my first time visiting a long house as well. It was so big and so long and many families live in a long house. Anyway, we will be going to Mukah again next Monday for Zone Activity. It's going to be awesome seeing 10 Elders cycling on the road.
We'd been really close to one of the less active family. Bro Gima was his name and his wife is Sis Anita. They have 6 children and 1 daughter in law. Four were baptized. Two is going to be baptized this year including the daughter in law and the other one was underage. Bro Gima often called us for fishing. We didn't really fish but look at him fishing and talk to him. On Friday, it was a holiday and the family decided to go fishing. And we were supposed to meet with the daughter in law to teach her. As I finish the lesson with a prayer, praying that Bro Gima would get a huge fish. THERE! He caught a huge fish right after I said that, everyone was screaming in the middle of the prayer. The power of prayer! =]
One of the church members shared an experience with us about his son. He said that when they were sleeping. His son was awake and was crying because of the nightmare he had. He waked his father up and tell his father that they need to pray. So the father decided to offer a prayer and then they went to sleep again. It is really amazing how religion can play a great role in help strengthening a family. The story really inspires me to apply religion in my family as well.
Yesterday in church, the speakers that were suppose to give talk didn't show up. So guess what? The Elders were called to give talk last minute. I wasn't really prepared so I shared finding your own favorite scripture verses to help you in your daily life. Be in afflictions or problems, your favorite scriptures verses will help you find solution. I guess the church has train me really well that with a snap of finger, I can go up to the stage and talk with confidence. It was my first time talking without my iPhone with me. Words just keeping coming out. I don't know why but I just love giving talk as I love inspiring people. I suppose this is one of the talent I receive from Heavenly Father.
With Love,
Elder Tan
