Week 87

It's Mother's Day on 11 May and it also mean that I can skype home.

I have been to 2 church's open house, one in Sibu and one in Malacca. All I could say is, you need a lot of preparation but by listening to your experience, I guess maybe Christianity is just not a big part in West as compared to East because there weren't a lot of people in Malacca as well.

I just got back from MLC and it was really inspiring every time in MLC because I am able to receive direction and revelation for my zone. I am deeply impress with President Mains because he is such a humble guy and has a good sense of humor. Traveling to Singapore is a pain because we have to wake up at 4:30am to catch our flight at 6am. It was really tiring but I guess the MLC part make up for everything even though it's really tiring. Now, the next thing that we have to think of is preparing a really good training for tomorrow and we have been super busy since we came back. I really do wish sometimes there is 48 hours per day but sometimes I felt that 24 hours is too long. Human are just so weird. When they have something, they want more. When they got what they want, they want even more.

We have a lot of appointments cancelled these past few weeks and it's not a good experience. However, I am determine to work with those less actives even though they cancelled on us so much. If not, I would just go do contacting. Frankly speaking, I never like knocking but sometimes you have no choice and you just need to go knock because that is the one of the source to get new people. I criticize a lot on knocking door missionaries and yet they never listen because they just love knocking. I guess since they love doing it, we just need to do it differently then because I felt like we can't change what they do but we can teach them do it differently/smart. I recently came up with a new way of contacting and I talked about it in MLC. Some of the Zone Leaders and Sister Mains express some interest in it. We actually stopped doing it few weeks ago because President Mains do not want it to become our purpose so we kinda pulled back all the copies and revise it over again. I think this is one of the tools in getting new people. First, they will be able to read and write by answering the questions. Second, we will instantly find out their needs rather than spending another few more minutes discerning and asking inspired questions. Third, we get their contact information that include phone number and address less than 5 minutes. We will be giving a training on this tomorrow

We have seen some success from it. We have been meeting with this guy called Jimbun through survey contacting. He doesn't read and write but he is probably the best I have seen from the category of not reading and writing. We taught him Restoration twice and he just won't get it so we decided to watch Restoration with him. After finishing the video, he asked what time is the church starting tomorrow and we told him that it is 9am. And he said he would come, we seem a little skeptical because most of the people that say they would come never show up. The second day which is on Sunday, he called and told us that he is on his way. Minutes later he called and he is walking into the church. It proves me wrong. I was totally amaze at how this guy that couldn't read and write sacrifice so much when I have seen so many in the past that would never understand what is sacrifice. After all the meeting, he came up to me and said, elders, I would call you guys when I come back from Rawas. Apparently, he needs to go to Rawas to work. Somewhere around Limbang. He is really awesome even though he doesn't read or write. It really does impress me and I am definitely guilty for judging.

Then we got another appointment through the survey contacting. I will update you next week.

I guess I never tell you anything about Sister Paula? She is a less active. When I first got into this area, she was very reluctant to see us. Her reaction would always be, "oh, elders you again." But over time, she has change a lot. We taught her not to be shy but to always ask questions and that influence her to ask whatever that comes into her mind. I have never seen iban ask questions like she does. We went yesterday to teach her with Brother Iraq. Brother Iraq recently got baptised this last January and has been coming to teach with us a lot. Brother Iraq's respond was, "elders, she asked a lot of good questions.". I am deeply impressed with how the gospel of Jesus Christ is able to change people so much. I have witness it in myself and others. I definitely know that what we have is true and will continue to help us if we would accept and apply it.

I believe I told you about Ceceilia right? I just don't get it. People meet with you when they have problems but when they resolve their problem, they just wont meet with you anymore. This remind me of countless of stories in Book of Mormon about how people would turn away from God after they got what they want. Cecilia hasn't been wanting to meet with us but she came to church. I dont get it. I just dont get it. Why and how someone who isn't meeting the missionaries but still continue to come to church? But I managed to make my way through to get an appointment for tomorrow but I am skeptical that she would cancel it again as usual.

Life can been really great when you focus. I guess the key is all in your mind. Whatever you think will really do influence you. If you think this is bored, this will be bored. If you think this is going to be fun. It will be fun. I firmly believe that it has to do with controlling your own thoughts. I guess this would be easier said than done right. Well then, start practising to control your thoughts now then. Haha.

And mom, I have been cooking a lot lately because Elder Bodhaine isn't as into Malaysian food anymore and he loves cooking. And because he loves cooking, i will have to eat in all the time. I have been cooking a ton of food which you guys might think is not healthy but I have stopped eating instant noodles already. Some of them are iban rice (an iban family gave some rice to me) with honey nuggets with corn, carrot and peas and burritos with chicken and lettuce and burger.

I love all of you. See you guys soon

Elder Tan

Sis Darie children. They are the most well behaved Iban kids I have ever seen. They are really nice too.

He keeps crying until I kneel down and then he sat on my knee and stopped crying and I took this picture.

We just got back from Singapore that day and went straight to Sis Darie's house to learn to make curry puff. She makes really good curry puff. Probably the best I ever have.

This is the Iban shield and sword.

Remember the huge mansion I told you guys in Miri? It looks like a castle on the hill. The chinese missionaries actually go knocked on that door. I am proud of them.
