Back from Sick

According to the senior couple here, shortly after the Prophet change the missionary age requirement, the Stake President somewhere around the State receive 500 new missionary application from the sisters.
I actually set some personal goals for myself and hope to see some changes in me;
  • Read & Truly understand Book of Mormon, Doctrine & Covenants and Pearl of Great Price within 3 months.
  • You pick anyone on the street, I approach them and talk to them.
  • Overcome all my fears that is preventing me from progressing.
  • Become a really good teacher in teaching. Not teach lesson, but teach people.
These are some of the things which I hope I would achieve first. I am almost done with Book of Mormon. I don't know why but it seems that reading is the only thing that I can do in the house. I'd been reading from the church magazines and church materials a lot. I gotta say it has a lot of positive impact on me. I personally feel that I am growing really fast. My favorite scripture verse will explain everything. Look up 2Nephi 28:30
30 For behold, thus saith the Lord God: I will give unto the children of men line upon line, precept upon aprecept, here a little and there a little; and blessed are those who hearken unto my precepts, and lend an ear unto my counsel, for they shall learn bwisdom; for unto him that creceiveth I will givedmore; and from them that shall say, We have enough, from them shall be taken away even that which they have.
On the night of last Tuesday, while everyone was asleep except me because things didn't turn out the way I suppose. First, a mosquito ruined my night by buzzing around my ear. Second, I woke up in the middle of the night and threw up then I went to sleep. It continues repeatedly for 3 times in the middle of the night. It wasn't a good night sleep. Later in the early morning, I woke up and threw up again. But this time was different, I finally have a peaceful sleep. All the appointment was canceled on that day because I was having a hot fever and do not have much strength to move. So in short, I threw up 4 times and basically slept the whole day. I did not have lunch or dinner because I do not have the appetite to eat.
At that time, I was thinking, where is my private doctor when I need her? That's my mom. My mom is my personal private doctor. Every time when I am sick, she is always there for me telling me to eat this eat that. This time things are a little different, I do not have much strength so I laid on the bed the whole day. Elder Bradley and the other elders did a really good job in taking care of me. They gave me priesthood blessing. And a member even bought me a porridge which I didn't eat until the second day. Later in the evening, I was so sick that I couldn't take it so I took 2 ibuprofen(chemical pill) and went to sleep. After few hours of sleep, I woke up from my sleep and my teeth feels so tight that everything in my mouth became heavy and heavier.
This is the thing that I fear the most in my life that I would cry when I was a kid. Your teeth would just get heavy and heavier and you just wanted to bite off your tongue. I ran down from the bedroom and tell Elder Bradley what happen. We were supposed to go see doctor but we didn't because we can't get on hold with the Senior Couple. I was in so deep pain at that time that I couldn't bear it that I keep running from down stair to upstairs and so forth. Elder Bradley at that time looked at me and say, I am sorry man. It was so pain that time I thought of charging towards the wall.
Finally I sprayed the Vitaspray, vitamin spray that my mom gave it to me, into my mouth and the weight starts to disappear. But shortly after, it returns again and I was in deep pain again. I couldn't do anything at that time and I was standing with one leg while the other leg was on the sofa with my head looking down and my hand on half of my face. The weight on my head and mouth became to increase while my hand supported the weight. I began to pray. I said, if this is what you want, then do it. I am ready! The weight just keep increasing and the pain is indescribable. Shortly after the prayer, I sat on the chair and things are finally cooling down.
I'd been thinking and pondering a lot. Why does it has to come back now when it disappears more than 15 years ago? I know it was a challenge for me to overcome my weaknesses and a challenge to test my faith. Shortly after all these thoughts, I finally come to know that I have a very weak body that can hardly resists against chemical. I guess it was because of the side effects of the chemical pill. I have never taken any chemical pills for a long time until recently. I know this is crazy but trust me, I am not taking any chemical pills in my life anymore.
That day, I'd slept for more than 26 hours and have not eaten anything for 26 hours. I thought it was really crazy but I got to say I have finally overcome my fear that I used to have when I was a kid. Things are getting tough at time but always remember to have faith in God. And this is my favorite scripture verses about faith. Alma 36:3
3 And now, O my son Helaman, behold, thou art in thy youth, and therefore, I beseech of thee that thou wilt hear my words and learn of me; for I do know that whosoever shall put their atrust in God shall be supported in their btrials, and their troubles, and their afflictions, and shall be clifted up at the last day.
For the bold words, replace it with your own name.
The second day, Elder Bradley and me were outside one of the investigator's house. We were looking for addresses that we wrote down about the less active members. A less active member passed by us but we didn't know because we never meet him before and he went home somewhere around that area. Then later on, he saw us knocking on his door. He was really really surprise and said that he knows that it is time for him to return to the church. He told us all these when we talked to him. Miracles never stop happening in our daily life.
Yesterday, we invited Jowyta and Sagoh, our newly met investigator to church. And because they didn't know where is our church so we plan to meet up in a place but we didn't see them at that time but they say they were waiting there. We were all really confused because we do not know where they are and they do not know where we are. So we planned to meet in one of the shopping mall there. Our church starts at 11.30am and it was already 11.50am. Then they called us to leave as they do not want to waste our time anymore but they will look for the place. But we insist on waiting and waited till 12pm before we decided to head back to the church. While cycling back to the church, we stopped at the traffic light. I heard someone calling my name, and I looked back. It was them! We'd been waiting for them for so long and there they are coming out of nowhere. Then we all head back to the church together. At that time, I somehow felt that we are gonna meet them in the traffic light. I don't know why but yes it did happen.
Often time returned missionaries said they have the best 2 years in their life by sharing all these miracles and cool stories. While me on the other hand, I do not just want to tell miracles that happen in my life but I would love to share all the hardship that I have went through. It doesn't mean to prove how strong I am but it is a message to everyone that is having problems in their life. Always remember that there is hope. Never lose hope.
Sincerely,
Elder Tan

  1. Hi Elder Kelvin Tan, I am inspred by your recent story about your illness and having to cope without your family to take care of you, especially your Mom. Moms are the best when adversities strick but now you know you can really rely on Heavenly Father. Pray always as you indeed meet a lot of adversities along the way. Pray for safety, guidance, inspiration and the tenacity to complete your mission with honour. We will pray for you too. Take care. From Sister Sophie Ting
