A Little Misfortune

I got myself a new bike that cost me RM1460 and a black helmet that cost me RM90. It's a blue black bike and I painted it black so that I can become batman. That was part of it but the main reason is to avoid being stolen. And because I am a Malaysian and asking for free gifts has become part of our culture. I got myself a back light for free. I actually took some picture with it but it was stolen!!

The church is going to release a Malay version Book of Mormon and we ordered the first batch. So, it means that all this while, we have been using Indonesian Book of Mormon. Besides that, the exciting part is that the Prophet just declare effectively immediately that the age requirment for Young Men to serve their mission is 18 while 19 for Young Women. It means that we will be having more and more missionaries coming to join us. Currently 58,000 missionaries are serving around the world and more and more are coming in to join us. I believe this is gonna be a wonderful experience to all the missionaries. I know that all the missionaries in the world share the same purpose which is to invite others unto Christ.

Whenever I go out with Elder Tippets, Elder Meister and Elder Bradley or with my companion alone. People never stop looking at us. That's crazy. Most of the time, they thought that I am an Chinese American. I would always be like, which part of me is Chinese American. I am an Asian! a Malaysian! And the coolest part is that when we entered a crowded food court, we will always make our way to the end of the food court. All these people never stop looking at us. I guess maybe we have these light shinning at us that people keep looking at us. Haha.

Anyway on Friday around 3 - 4pm, our house got broke in. At that time, me and my companion were teaching a new investigator and I felt that something is not right but couldn't identify what it is. (It is true that missionaries have the spirit of revelation) Until my other housemates, Zone Leaders that got home around 8pm because their flight got delayed. They called us and told us that our house just got broke in. I knew for sure that my camera is gone and it is really GONE! I reached home and rush to my room and noticed these are the things that were stolen;
  1. Camera (Canon) including charger and USB cable
  2. A new pair of black shoes
  3. A new highlighter with a price tag on it (RM2.20)
  4. 3 black pens
  5. 100 pesos
  6. all my coins
  7. Side bag that you bought
How DESPERATE for taking my pens and my new highlighter!! They took a lot of stuffs from our home. They even took a brand new vacuum cleaner that the senior couple missionary bought for us. They took Elder Tippet's external hard drive that contains all his missionaries pictures and he will be leaving this coming December. They took;
  1. Elder  Tippet's external hard drive
  2. Elder Tippet's milo tin that has RM70+ coins
  3. Elder Tippet's gold coin that his mom gave him
  4. Elder Meister's RM300 cash
  5. Elder Bradley's glasses
and more and more and more!! We called the police and three cops car came in. Few days before we got broke in, a house a couple of block away got broke in as well. And during the break-in session, our neighbour, an old lady saw what happen but ignored it because she said that she was scared. Well, we can't really blame her but I realize that the neighbourhood need to be educated on how to deal with this kind of situation. We called the Mission President, President Mains and he said that we need to move out soon but we can't move out yet because all the housing management office is closed on Saturday and Sunday. And we noticed that, the longer we stay in the house, the more stuffs we realize are stolen! So we tend to stay away from the house.

I would say, encounter this on my first month wasn't a good experience. Throughout my entire life, I have never felt this insecure before. I felt that part of my life is being harassed and don't feel safe anymore. That night, even when I was sleeping, I still feel insecure. Part of me wanted to give up and just go home but I can't because I promised my MTC teacher with a firm voice that I will never give up until I finish my mission. I totally felt discouraged in whatever things that I do. Even when we visited one of the investigators, I just don't feel like talking.

In addition to that, on the second day, when we were looking for a new place to stay. We were looking at a condominium and a Chinese resident passed by and told the guard right in front of us, "throw them out, don't let them come in." Elder Tippets then said, "we are trying to rent a place here." And they left.

First, my house got broke in and then I got despise by my own race. I have always being optimistic and still am. I have face a lot of disappointment but it never took me down until discouragement appear and took me down really bad. It took me a lot of efforts to pray for encouragement and strength to overcome my fear in being so insecure.

Mom, Dad and everyone,

Don't worry about me. I am still surviving and still will continue to survive. This is part of my growing process and I believe this is the fastest way to become a better person. Dealing all these things that I have never encounter before really teach me on how to deal with matters in future. And the most important thing is that, I have come to know that when a girl says she feels insecure, I totally understand how she feels and what to do =]

No matter how many hardships I have to go through, I will never give up and the thought of going home will never come to my mind again because I want to come home proudly and with glory and tell everyone that this 2 years is indeed the best 2 year in my life. In mission, days goes like seconds, weeks goes like minutes and months goes like hour. In a few hour time, I will definitely come home proudly.

Yesterday in the church, I bore my testimony in Iban. It feels exactly the same when I speak in Puchong branch. I see all these people smiles on their face and it just give me an impression that no matter where you go, the church is always the same. I am beginning to draw closer relationship to all these wonderful people.

Don't worry about the camera and other stuffs that got stolen. I got everything under control and everything is really under control. I might get myself a new camera but not now yet. Will be leaving to Singapore this week. I might be in Kuala Lumpur next week for training. If not, then I would be in Singapore again.

Sincerely,
Elder Tan
